Neither tells you whether this is wildfire smoke blowing in from Wyoming or ground-level ozone cooked up by Denver’s own traffic and sunlight. Neither tells you whether an easy jog is fine, a hard tempo run is risky, or you should just go back inside.

Denver is in peak ozone season right now. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment officially designates May 1 through September 30 as ozone season on the Front Range, with June and July historically posting the most Action Days. This year is already tracking with that pattern. Unlike wildfire smoke — which draws visible media coverage and generates obvious plumes across the mountains — ozone is invisible, generated locally, and almost entirely absent from public conversation about exercise safety. Yet it’s the more consistent summer threat for Denver runners and cyclists. The gap in public attention has never made much sense to me.
Ozone and Wildfire Smoke Are Not the Same Problem
This is the single most important thing to understand about Denver air quality, and almost no app or official health advisory makes the distinction visible.
Ozone is a gas. It forms when nitrogen oxides from car and truck exhaust react with volatile organic compounds — from oil and gas operations, among other sources — under ultraviolet radiation and heat. You cannot filter it with a mask. An N95 has no effect on a gas. Ozone builds through the day as sunlight drives the photochemical reaction, typically peaking between 2 and 6 p.m. Morning air is almost always lower in ozone than afternoon air, regardless of what the day’s forecast says. PM2.5, the fine particulate matter that defines wildfire smoke, is a different problem entirely. Physical particles small enough to lodge deep in lung tissue and enter the bloodstream. An N95 worn properly does meaningfully reduce your exposure. PM2.5 can be elevated at any hour, including early morning, and doesn’t follow the same daytime buildup pattern as ozone. During a heavy smoke event, going out at 6 a.m. instead of noon won’t protect you.
Here’s why this matters: a red AQI reading from ozone at 3 p.m. calls for a completely different response than a red reading from smoke at 7 a.m. On an ozone red day, your 6 a.m. run is probably the safest exercise you’ll do all day. On a smoke red day, that same run could expose you to particulate concentrations as bad as the afternoon. Most weather apps — and even AirNow’s main interface — show you a combined AQI number without flagging which pollutant is driving it. You have to look one level deeper. It’s an extra step, but it’s the one that actually matters.
Why Denver Has an Ozone Problem Even Without Fire
Denver’s ozone situation is a geography-plus-chemistry problem decades in the making. The Front Range sits at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, and the terrain creates a natural atmospheric trap. During the day, solar heating pulls air up the mountain slopes — upslope flow — carrying ozone precursors westward and upward. At night, cooler mountain air drains back over the metro, bringing those accumulated precursors with it. Temperature inversions periodically cap this drainage layer, concentrating pollutants near where people live.
The local pollution sources compounding that geography are specific. I-25, I-70, and I-225 generate enormous nitrogen oxide loads through the metro. Weld County’s oil and gas operations to the north and east are among the largest VOC emitters in the region. And Denver’s elevation — 5,280 feet — means the metro receives measurably more ultraviolet radiation than lower-elevation cities, which accelerates the photochemical reaction that converts precursors into ozone. If it’s smoke-driven PM2.5, early timing doesn’t help as much, and indoors becomes the smarter call. Sensitive individuals should move indoors on any red day, regardless of cause.
Purple (201+): Go inside. These are genuine health events. Healthy adults can experience measurable short-term lung function decreases at these levels; sensitive individuals face real acute risk. This isn’t a judgment call about fitness tradeoffs.
One ongoing frustration: neither CDPHE nor Denver Public Health defines “prolonged” exposure in minutes anywhere in their public guidance. You’re left without the specific thresholds you need. There’s a reasonable clinical argument that for people with reactive airways, prior cardiovascular events, or kids in tow, AQI 80 should already prompt some caution — which sits in the officially “moderate” yellow range. PurpleAir sensors are low-cost, community-operated, and update every few minutes — much faster than regulatory monitors. The significant limitation: PurpleAir measures PM2.5 only and does not measure ozone at all. On a Denver summer ozone day — the most common type of bad air day the city sees — PurpleAir tells you essentially nothing useful. It also tends to read high in humid conditions due to sensor sensitivity to moisture. During wildfire smoke events, when hyperlocal PM2.5 variation matters and a nearby sensor can give you faster, neighborhood-specific information than a regulatory monitor two miles away, PurpleAir becomes genuinely valuable. Know what it measures and what it doesn’t.
Weather apps (Apple Weather, Weather.com, Google) pull AirNow’s single metro-wide number and display it as a color or label. Fine for a basic go/no-go check. They tell you nothing about which pollutant is driving the reading, nothing about neighborhood variation, and nothing about whether the number is rising or falling through the morning. If you’ve been relying on Apple Weather’s little leaf icon, you’ve been working with about a third of the relevant information.
Does Your Neighborhood Matter? Yes, Meaningfully
Denver is not a uniform airshed.
Globeville and Swansea sit directly at the I-25/I-70 interchange on the north side and carry the heaviest cumulative pollution burden in the city. The Simplest Fix: Run Before 10 A.M.
Ozone is a photochemical product that requires accumulated sunlight to form. It doesn’t exist in meaningful concentrations at 6 a.m. It builds through the morning and peaks in the afternoon. This isn’t a statistical tendency — it’s a direct consequence of the chemistry. On most orange ozone days, the air at 6 a.m. is green or yellow. The AQI forecast for the day reflects what’s expected at peak, not what exists when you’re lacing up.
A runner who shifts a Tuesday afternoon track session to early morning sidesteps the worst of the ozone problem on most summer days. A cyclist who finishes long miles before 10 a.m. rather than starting at noon is riding in fundamentally different air, even if the afternoon forecast turns red. It costs nothing except an earlier alarm.
The caveat, which typically arrives in July and runs through October: wildfire smoke and peak ozone at the same time. When PM2.5 is elevated from smoke while ozone is also peaking, morning timing helps with the ozone but not the smoke. It tells you what CDPHE expects the air to reach that day based on meteorological modeling — not what’s actually outside at 6 a.m. The right workflow is simple. Get the Action Day alert the night before. Check AirNow or CDPHE’s AirWatch Colorado dashboard in real time the morning of, before you leave. The forecast gives you the warning; the regulatory monitor gives you the current condition.
Outside May 1 through September 30, the photochemical conditions that drive ozone formation are typically insufficient and Action Days are rare. Inside that window — mid-June through August especially — treat every morning check as a real consideration.

If it’s ozone and it’s before 10 a.m., the current reading is likely lower than the day’s forecast — green and yellow are normal at that hour even on days forecast to hit orange or red by afternoon. If it’s PM2.5 from smoke, morning timing matters less.
Orange on a clear-sky ozone day before 10 a.m.? Healthy adults can likely run at moderate effort. Shorten hard intervals. Watch for symptoms. Red from ozone in the afternoon? Move it to the next morning or go inside. Red from smoke at any hour? Strong case for indoors. Purple, for any reason? Indoor workout. No negotiating with that one.
